Ions
Some of the proteins involved in glycosylation need ions such as iron, magnesium and manganese to work properly. Inside your cells, there are special proteins called transporters that are specialized in transferring several things (e.g., other proteins, sugars and ions) from the outside of the cell to the inside and vice-versa. When the proteins that transport the ions are defective, all the other proteins inside the cell that need that particular ion can be affected. By giving the missing ion we are making sure that the proteins in need can work properly.
